For this howto/walkthrough you'll want to grab the latest VMware Server tag/gz set from VMware. You can use wget to download the files.

Once you have unzipped the file using gunzip, run tar -xvf on the result tar file (I use the v switch here cause verbose is so fun to watch).

Then follow along with me by commandline - it's fun, easy, and EULA-filled!

string@linux:~> cd vmware-server-distrib/
string@linux:~/vmware-server-distrib> ls
bin doc etc FILES installer lib man sbin vmware-install.pl vmware-vix
for backup or archival purposes and except
as expressly permitted in this EULA. You
may not remove any titles, trademarks or
trade names, copyright notices, legends,
Software. You are not granted any rights
to any trademarks or service marks of
VMware. VMware retains all rights not
expressly granted to you.
lease, license, sublicense, distribute or
otherwise transfer in whole or in part the
Software or the Software License Key to
another party; (ii) provide, disclose,
divulge or make available to, or permit
use of the Software in whole or in part
by, any third party (except Designated
Administrative Access) without VMware's
prior written consent; or (iii) modify or
create derivative works based upon the
Software. Except to the extent expressly
permitted by applicable law, and to the
extent that VMware is not permitted by
that applicable law to exclude or limit
the following rights, you may not
decompile, disassemble, reverse engineer,
or otherwise attempt to derive source code
from the Software, in whole or in part.
You may use the Software to conduct
internal performance testing and
benchmarking studies, the results of which
you (and not unauthorized third parties)
may publish or publicly disseminate;
provided that VMware has reviewed and
approved of the methodology, assumptions
and other parameters of the study. Please
contact VMware at benchmark@vmware.com to
request such review.
modify the GPL Software under the terms of
the GPL. You may obtain a copy of the
source code corresponding to the binaries
for the GPL Software (the "GPL Source
Files") by downloading the GPL Source
name and address, to VMware at the address
specified under the heading "Contact
Information" below, in which case VMware
will mail a copy of the GPL Source Files
to you on a CD or equivalent physical
medium. This offer to obtain a copy of
the GPL Source Files is valid for three
years from the date you acquired this
Software product.
3.5 VMware Tools. You may distribute the
VMware Tools internally within your entity
provided that (i) you do not modify the
VMware Tools; (ii) you distribute the
VMware Tools in object code format only
and solely in conjunction with, and as
part of, the Virtual Machine you create
with the Software and are sharing
internally; (iii) you do not distribute
the VMware Tools to any third party; (v)
you do not use VMware's name, logo or
trademarks to market the Virtual Machine
you create with the Software and (vi) you
agree to indemnify, hold harmless, and
defend VMware from and against any claims
or lawsuits, including attorneys' fees,
that arise or result from the use or
distribution of the Virtual Machine you
create. Notwithstanding the foregoing,
you may refer to VMware names, logos or
obtaining any licenses necessary to
operate any such third-party software,
part of the Software and are subject to
the terms and conditions of this EULA.
VMware may use any technical information
business purposes without restriction,
including for product support and
development. VMware will not use
information in a form that personally
6.2 Effect of Termination. In the event of
termination, you must destroy all copies
of the Software and Software License Key.
In addition you must remove all copies of
the Software, including all backup copies,
from the Server and all computers and
time to time, VMware may change the terms
of this EULA. VMware will notify you of
such change. Your continued use of the
Software will indicate your agreement to
the change.
7. LIMITED WARRANTY AND LIMITATION OF
LIABILITY
7.1 Limited Warranty. VMware warrants that the
the Software will substantially conform to
the description contained in the
applicable end user documentation in each
case for a period of 90 days after the
date of shipment of the Software License
Key. EXCEPT FOR THE PRECEDING EXPRESS
LIMITED WARRANTY, TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT
THE LICENSE FEES, IF ANY, PAID BY YOU FOR
THE SOFTWARE LICENSED TO YOU UNDER THIS
EULA. THE FOREGOING LIMITATIONS SHALL
APPLY TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY
APPLICABLE LAW, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER
VMWARE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY
OF SUCH DAMAGES AND REGARDLESS OF WHETHER
ANY REMEDY FAILS OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE.
8. GENERAL
understandings, promises, representations,
or descriptions with respect to the
Software.
8.2 Headings. Headings under this EULA are
intended only for convenience and shall
not affect the interpretation of this
EULA.
8.3 Waiver and Modification. No failure of
either party to exercise or enforce any of
its rights under this EULA will act as a
waiver of those rights. This EULA may
only be modified, or any rights under it
waived, by a written document executed by
the party against which it is asserted.
8.4 Severability. If any provision of this
EULA is found illegal or unenforceable, it
will be enforced to the maximum extent
permissible, and the legality and
enforceability of the other provisions of
this EULA will not be affected.
America, without regard to its choice of
law principles. The United Nations
Convention for the International Sale of
Goods shall not apply.
8.6 Government Restrictions. You may not
export or re-export the Software except in
compliance with the United States Export
Administration Act and the related rules
and regulations and similar non-U.S.
government restrictions, if applicable.

Improvements noted on the newsletter -
What's New and Improved with VMware Fusion Beta 3
Improved performance: You now have the option of turning off debugging features in VMware Fusion to enjoy even better performance.
Support for Boot Camp: You no longer have to choose between Windows or Mac—run Windows XP side-by-side with Mac OS X off your existing Boot Camp partition.
Windows Easy Install: Just answer a few simple questions, insert your Windows CD, and VMware Fusion will automatically create a Windows virtual machine that is optimized for your Mac.
Virtual machine packages: Virtual machines are now encapsulated in a single, easy-to-manage package. Move your virtual machines to another hard drive or Mac simply by copying a file.
Enhanced virtual machine management: Managing multiple virtual machines and changing virtual machine settings is even easier with the Virtual Machine Library.
Improved international support: European and Japanese Apple keyboards now work properly in virtual machines.

From Andy Tucker's blog:
"This is Solaris 10 Update 1, plus the Studio 11 compilers, plus all the Java Enterprise System software - app server, web server, directory server, etc. - all in a VMware virtual machine. No OS or application install, just download and untar, fire up VMware Player/Server/Workstation (take your pick), and power the VM on."

Highly recommended by myself as making a Solaris virtual machine isn't difficult, but can take a pretty long time, and even longer to configure properly.

Thanks, Sun!

It's good to see two cores showing up in Windows XP, but it will be important to see how Vista and Longhorn tests go - I can't wait to get my acceptance email.

This lil VM is based on RedHat, Asterix, and VMware.
You'll need the VoIP hardware and line to make it work, but the HOWTO is amazingly detailed.

I haven't been this excited since VMware server was announced as being free.
Here's the rundown:

• Record/replay - which allows you to record entire the runtime state of the VM as it changes, and then play it back for debugging purposes
• Support for Vista as host and guest, and for Solaris 10 as a guest
• Virtual battery for laptops that shows battery life
• Easy virtual disk mounting for Windows so you can mount a VM disk file as a drive
• New virtual hardware to include USB2 and a 64-bit sound driver
• Max RAM moves from 4GB to 8GB
• Improved and more flexible shared folders
• Cross-platform drag and drop and copy/paste operations
• Improved inter-operability with remote control software such as VNC
• Support for multiple displays
• Experimental support for quad-core machines and more virtual PCI slots

I just can't wait!
