For this howto/walkthrough you'll want to grab the latest VMware Server tag/gz set from VMware. You can use wget to download the files.

Once you have unzipped the file using gunzip, run tar -xvf on the result tar file (I use the v switch here cause verbose is so fun to watch).

Then follow along with me by commandline - it's fun, easy, and EULA-filled!

VMware Tools may include some or all of the following, depending on your Guest Operating System: an SVGA driver, a mouse driver, the VMware Tools control panel and support for features such as shared folders, drag and drop in Windows guests, shrinking virtual disks, time synchronization with the host, VMware Tools scripts, and connection and disconnection of devices while the virtual machine is running. 1.13 "Virtual Machine" means an instance of a Guest Operating System and any application programs installed thereon, running on a computing device on which the Software is installed, or suspended to disk or any other storage media accessible by the computing device. 1.14 "VMTN Software" means Software received by you pursuant to a VMware Technology Network subscription. 2. No OS or application install, just download and untar, fire up VMware Player/Server/Workstation (take your pick), and power the VM on."

Highly recommended by myself as making a Solaris virtual machine isn't difficult, but can take a pretty long time, and even longer to configure properly.
